White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel Announces Resignation

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel tendered his resignation on Friday as he explores the possibility of a Mayoral run in Chicago.  President Barak Obama personally announced the departure of one of his top aides.  The move is the first of many departures expected as the President plans to shuffle his staff after being in office for 20 months.

Emanuel is expected to be in Chicago next week to discuss his potential Mayoral bid with political leaders and will engage in “listening tours” in order to become acquainted with the issues most pressing to the people of Chicago.

While Emanuel’s leaving the White House seems to indicate his intention to replace outgoing Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, who is not seeking re-election, an official announcement of his candidacy is not expected until significantly later.  The staging of Emanuel’s intentions to run for Mayor is a common occurrence in politics as candidates attempt to receive as much media coverage as possible.  The more announcements a candidate makes, the more often they are in front of the cameras and in the news allowing them to remain visible to the public.

Emanuel’s decision to leave the White House had been widely speculated since Daley’s announcement that he would not seek re-election weeks ago.  Since Daley’s announcement, Emanuel has held meetings with political leaders and other potential candidates to discuss the possibility of his running.

Obama said during his announcement that he believe Emanuel would “make an excellent mayor” for the city of Chicago.

The February 22, 2011 primary to select candidates on next year’s Mayoral ballot is expected to be huge, with the possibility of up to 30 people seeking to get their name on the ballot.

The President named senior advisor Pete Rouse as Emanuel’s temporary replacement until a permanent chief of staff can be named.
