Urbanspoon, Zagat Partner to Serve Up Restaurant Content
Urbanspoon may be the most widely used restaurant smart phone application, but its new deal with Zagat will improve it even further. Zagat pioneered the user-generated restaurant rating and review idea, with content curators sifting through thousands of results to produce in-depth and helpful guides to dining around the globe. The partnership will bring over 25,000 curated Zagat reviews to the Urbanspoon app. This will dramatically increase the helpful content offered by the app to diners searching for a place to eat.
Adding the content from Zagat allows users to feel that the reviews are screened and trustworthy. Only the reviews with clear descriptions of the food and atmosphere make it into the Zagat library. Urbanspoon offers a number of other reviews from top restaurant critics and statistics on the number of consumers who “like” the restaurant. When combined with the recommendations from Zagat’s systems the app will become substantially more useful.
The app offers a complete profile of each restaurant reviewed. General business information like the address and operating hours are included, as well as photos of the restaurant interior and dishes ordered by diners. Blog posts from a handful of top restaurant bloggers are also included if they are relevant to the establishment, followed by user reviews from both Urbanspoon’s system and the Zagat library.
Urbanspoon’s application also features a unique method for finding the best restaurant to find your needs. The restaurant slot machine allows users to input their preferences for cuisine type, atmosphere and price range. Then, with a shake of the smart phone, a suitable restaurant is displayed. The app has been downloaded over 20 million times, and the new addition of Zagat’s information will increase this number further.
