Trump Makes Offer to Purchase Controversial Mosque Site

As the controversy surrounding the proposed building of a mosque and Islamic cultural center near ground zero continues, many are searching for a solution that will satisfy those against building the mosque at the proposed site.  It seems as though everyone from the current mayor to former mayors have proposed alternate sites and even for New York City to pay for the new land.  However, Hisham Elzanaty, the owner of the building site, has declined each proposal.  You can now count Donald Trump among those who have been turned down as well.

Trump made Elzanaty a cash offer to purchase the building site so that the controversy would come to an end.  Trump offered more than $6 million for the rights to the land; however, it appears that the developers have turned Trump’s offer down.  The offer also included a stipulation that the developer’s new site must be at least five blocks away from ground zero.

Elzanaty paid $4.8 million for the site.  Trump’s offer included Elzanaty’s purchase price as well as a 25% premium.  Wolodymyr Starosolsky, Elzanaty’s lawyer said the offer was nothing more than a publicity stunt by Trump.  He also said that Elzanaty considered the offer letter less than serious.

In the past Trump has said that it would be good if the developers would choose a different site for the buildings, as he feels the current plans are insensitive to family members of 9/11 victims.
