Columbia Records has announced that it plans to release The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – the Witmark Demos by Bob Dylan on October 19th. Columbia is also working in conjunction with Legacy records to release a box set containing the first eight LP albums under the title Bob Dylan – the Original Mono Recordings. The sets will be available on both compact disc and 180-gram vinyl.

47 songs recorded by Bob Dylan, played only on acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica, make up The Witmark Demos. These demos were recorded for Dylan’s first and second publishers, Leeds Music an M. Witmark & Sons, between 1962 and 1964. All of these songs were written before Bob Dylan was 24. 15 never before released songs are included among the demos, including “Guess I’m Doing Fine” and the the civil rights struggle inspired “Long Ago, Far Away”.

The Original Mono Recordings encompasses the original monaural recordings of Bob Dylan’s first eight LP albums. Stereo recording was available during the time, but artists like the Beatles and Bob Dylan preferred recording their original mixes in mono and letting studio engineers create a stereo version of it for release. This gave them the best control over their sound.

This boxset will include a deluxe booklet full of Bob Dylan photos and a essay by Greil Marcus, a well known critic and Dylan expert. Each compact disc or vinyl record will come with a special jacket printed to copy the artwork of the original release, and featuring any labels or stickers found on those jackets.

The albums included in the Original Mono Recordings set span five years, from 1962 to 1967. Combined with the Witmark Demos, these two sets offer the world a broad view of Bob Dylan’s musical genius. The transition from a beginning songwriter to a skilled musician is clearly demonstrated through these sets.
