Steven Tyler Looks to Be the Next American Idol Judge

One of the two open American Idol judge spots has been filled.  The positions became available after Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres left the show at the end of last season.  There have been rumors and speculation over who the next set of judges will be since it was announced that Cowell and DeGeneres would be leaving the show.  It appears that legendary rocker Steven Tyler has filled one of the two spots.

Many music industry heavyweights have been mentioned as possible replacements for the departed judges.  Everyone from Brett Michaels to Jennifer Lopez was mentioned in connection with the positions.  As of yet, there has been no official statement from FOX or Tyler on his new position.  What started as a rumor has been confirmed by multiple sources, including Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton.  Hamilton acknowledged that the group was going to have to reschedule their upcoming work because Tyler would be working on American Idol.

There has still been no announcement as to who the second new judge will be either.  The new season of American Idol is slated to begin in January of 2011.  The season will mark the wildly successful show’s tenth year on the air in America.  Producers have discussed many changes to the show; including bringing back some of the original people behind the scenes, to help shape the new scope of the program.

Award winning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, is one of those originators coming back to the show.  Lythgoe recently said that there is no one locked into the judge positions at this point, though he does anticipate official announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
