JetBlue Flight Attendant Grabs Beer and a Makes Mad Dash for Exit from Plane

Steven Slater, a flight attendant for JetBlue, caused quite a stir on August 9 at John F. Kennedy airport when, upon landing, he activated the emergency exit, grabbed a beer, and slid down the emergency slide while quitting his job.  The disgruntled flight attendant was later arrested on charges of reckless endangerment and criminal mischief for the stunt.

The incident apparently started when a passenger attempted to retrieve their luggage from the planes overhead storage compartments while the plane was still moving after landing.  Slater, who has been a flight attendant for twenty years, instructed the passenger to be seated numerous times according to police.  As the passenger was removing the luggage from the overhead, Slater was apparently struck in the head.  The man refused to apologize, and that is when Slater had had enough.

The veteran flight attendant proceeded to use the planes intercom system to curse at everyone on the plane before making his escape.  Once Slater finished his diatribe, he ran to the galley of the plane, grabbed a beer, and exited through the emergency door.  Slater proceeded to run to his vehicle and make his way home.

According to an anonymous law enforcement official, JetBlue waited over 25 minutes before calling authorities, giving Slater the time he needed to make it home.

JetBlue said that no injuries or further incidents occurred after Slater’s exit.  The company is working in collaboration with the FAA and the New York and New Jersey Port Authorities while investigating the incident.
