Booktrack Brings Synchronized Soundtracks to Ebooks

Watching a movie without its soundtrack strips the experience of something vital. Now a new creation known as Booktrack may bring music and reading together in a synchronized format. The new novel The Power of Six from Pittacus Lore integrates subtle ambient sounds, sound effects and a soundtrack with the ebook. The creation was a collaboration between the publisher, HarperCollins Children’s Books, and Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Other big names in publishing and music, such as Full Fathom Five and Park Road Post, also worked on the project.

The management team and investors are known for innovation as well. Peter Thiel, the PayPal former CEO and co-founder and the first external investor for Facebook, is playing an important role in the creation of Booktrack. A slew of best-selling authors are also lining up to take part in the new program with their planned releases. One feature that makes Booktrack a true innovation above other sound programs is the synchronization. The program measures the reader’s reading speed and slows down or speeds up the soundtrack to compensate. All readers will hear the same music and sounds at certain parts of the text regardless of their individual reading speed.

Readers often use their MP3 players to listen to music along with a book, but they choose the music. With Booktrack the author adds another layer of artistry by designing a soundtrack specific to the moods and atmosphere of their writing. This turns reading into an immersion experience like watching a movie. Booktrack is currently available on many eBook readers, including the iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone. Android and other apps are coming shortly. The Power of Six is currently the only Booktrack title, but this fall will see the release of a set of short stories and a number of favorite classics.
