Baseball: A New York Love Story

Baseball: A New York Love Story will begin airing on Sunday, September 26.  The multi-part series examines the love affair that New York has with baseball.  The series will be broadcast by WNET.ORG and hosted by Bob Costas.

At the heart of the series are the memories of New York baseball throughout the years.  Over the summer, WNET.ORG asked their viewers to tell of their favorite baseball memories.  Dozens of New York baseball fans were interviewed and shared their tales of brushes with greatness, memorable games, and spending the day at the ballpark with their fathers.  The series looks at more than 60 years of New York baseball.  Dating from the day Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier up through the Yankees winning the 2009 World Series.

In a move away from many similar broadcasts, Baseball: A New York Love Story will not show the stories based on era or team.  Instead, the series will categorize the baseball stories into episodes such as “Brushes with History”, “Learning to Love, Learning to Hate”, and other emotional or memorable types of moments.  The series will attempt to look into the psychology of the fans in New York and how baseball helped shape generations of New Yorkers.

The series, which is scheduled to run alongside Ken Burn’s The Tenth Inning, features interviews with Joan Hodges, Gil Hodges Jr., Mike Francesa, former Brooklyn Dodger Joe Pignatano, actor Peter Reigert, and many other New Yorkers.
