Atlanta Baptist Televangelist Eddie Long Accused of Inappropriate Conduct with Teenage Boys

Baptist pastor Eddie Long, leader of the 25,000 strong congregation at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, is facing serious allegations from four young men who were once part of the church. These young men are claiming that Eddie Long offered them expensive gifts of travel, cars, and jewelry in exchange for sexual favors. The relationships between Eddie Long and these men all took place while they were teenagers, further complicating the matter.

When Eddie Long took the pulpit last Sunday, many congregation members were disappointed by his words about the subject. He said very little, simply comparing himself to David in the Bible story of David and Goliath. He did not outright dispute the claims, and has said little else to media members or church goers about the accusations. Other church leaders worry that more young men will step forward with similar accusations, whether they are truthful or simply trying to jump on the bandwagon.

Either way, Eddie Long has made it clear that he plans to fight the allegations and will be defending himself in the lawsuit. The four men claim they were coerced into the sexual relationships, and that the pastor used his position within the church and his wealth to do so. Pastor Long has been married for many years and has spent much of his time as the leader of the New Birth Missionary Church preaching passionately against homosexuality.

Critics have drawn parallels between this incident and the accusations against Ted Haggard, who was found to have engaged in homosexual relationships despite his sermons against it. The lawsuit will take many months to unfold, and at this point little hard evidence has been shown that proves Eddie Long did anything wrong. Only time will tell if the accusations are false, or if he did abuse his power within the church.
